                         The Department of Political Science established in 1981 under the leadership of Prof. O. M. Mathew, has been functioning excellently since then. The department presently offers Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political Science as per the syllabi of MGU-UGP from 2024 onwards. Through the years, the department has maintained its academic excellence by winning top University positions in BA Political Science-Model examinations in Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The department is led by a team of faculty members known for their innovative teaching methods and ability to inspire students. The department also benefits from the strong support of retired staff and alumni.

The students after completion of UG from here, are pursuing their higher education in various institutions under many of the esteemed Universities in India and abroad. Some of them are pursuing research in various Universities and are working under public and private sectors.

Along with curriculum, the department also encourages students to excel in the area of co-curricular activities including NCC, NSS, Sports events and many of the students from the department have secured prizes in the Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University, National and International level competitions. 

Department has a strong Students’ Subject Association and is to promote collaboration among the undergraduate students of Political Science beyond classroom learning. It is a forum for students to express themselves by participating in activities like debates, lectures, inviting speakers to get an expert opinion on the current socio-political issues of national and international importance, displaying and improving their organizational skills by way of organizing programmes and educational-cum-recreational excursions, having panel discussions, quizzes and so on. It is a matter of pride that many of our students won remarkable achievements especially in debate and elocution competitions held at University level and various Colleges inside Kerala.

As a part of extracurricular activities, the department organised several lectures on contemporary socio-political issues by inviting dignitaries in the areas concerned.  As an extension activity, the department conducts awareness classes on laws and justice system beneficial for the Higher Secondary Schools at Kottayam Municipality. By fostering academic excellence, vibrant student life, and community engagement, the Political Science department prepares graduates to be impactful leaders in a changing world.
