The Department of Political Science, established in 1981 under the leadership of Prof. O. M. Mathew, has been functioning excellently since then. The department presently offers a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political Science, following the MGU-UGP syllabus from 2024 onwards. Over the years, it has maintained academic excellence, consistently achieving top university positions in BA Political Science model examinations under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

Led by a dedicated faculty known for innovative teaching and student mentorship, the department receives strong support from its retired staff and alumni. Graduates of the department pursue higher education in esteemed universities in India and abroad and are actively engaged in research, as well as careers in both public and private sectors.

The department encourages excellence beyond academics by promoting participation in NCC, NSS, and sports. Students have achieved notable successes at inter-collegiate, inter-university, national, and international competitions.

The department also hosts a vibrant Students’ Subject Association that fosters collaboration and holistic development. It organizes debates, lectures, panel discussions, quizzes, and excursions. The association provides platforms for students to voice opinions on socio-political issues and develop organizational and leadership skills. Many students have earned accolades in debate and elocution contests at various levels.

As part of its extracurricular activities, the department regularly invites dignitaries for lectures on contemporary socio-political topics. It also conducts awareness sessions on law and the justice system for higher secondary schools within the Kottayam Municipality. Through its commitment to academic excellence, community outreach, and co-curricular engagement, the Department of Political Science prepares graduates to become impactful leaders in a changing world.
