Established in 1967 with the launch of the B.Sc. Mathematics program under the visionary leadership of Prof. M.J. Thomas, the Department of Mathematics has grown into one of the foundational pillars of our institution. In a significant academic advancement, the department introduced the M.Sc. Data Analytics program in the academic year 2020–21—an initiative aligned with the evolving demands of the digital age and contemporary industry needs.

Prof. M.J. Thomas later served as Principal of the College from 1988 to 1995, and his legacy continues to inspire generations. The department has been nurtured by the academic excellence and dedication of eminent faculty members such as Prof. K. Chandra Sekharan, Prof. K.P. Thomas, Prof. P.G. Mathai, Dr. M.S. Samuel (Research Guide, M.G. University), Prof. K.U. Annamma, Prof. K.R. Geethakumari, the late Prof. M.M. Gilsanth, and Prof. M. Vijayalakshmi. We also take immense pride in the accomplishments of Prof. Alexander V. George, former Head of the Department, who later served as Principal of Baselius College.

The department houses a collection of over 1,500 books and a wide array of journals in Mathematics and related disciplines. It offers various certificate courses such as Python Programming, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning, aimed at building core competencies and bridging academic learning with real-world applications. A well-equipped computer lab with modern software and tools supports the department’s academic and research activities.

Through its Mathematics Association, the department fosters a vibrant academic community where students are encouraged to participate in a range of co-curricular activities. Notable events organized by the department include the annual Intercollegiate Quiz Competition in memory of Prof. M.J. Thomas, as well as an Intercollegiate Project Presentation Competition. Seminars, Workshops, and Lecture series are regularly conducted to enrich the academic environment.

Our students consistently excel in university examinations and enjoy a strong record of campus placements. The department’s distinguished alumni continue to make us proud, holding prestigious positions across India and abroad.
