The department is one of the leading departments in M.G University to which it is affiliated and its teachers include some of the state’s distinguished academic economists. It is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The department’s graduate course prepares students for a wide range of careers in academia, government and business and the M.A in Economics is recognized for the Capability Enhancement programme initiated to supplement the classroom learning. Teaching spans almost all the major subfields of economics with particular strengths in micro and macroeconomic theory, economics of development, environmental economics, international economics, heterodox economics, Indian and Kerala economic issues and statistical mathematical and econometrics tools for economics. Every year the department invites a number of leading public figures and economists to give lectures and as resource persons at seminars and workshops. Every year we organize at least one national or international seminar. A department library with more than 2500 books and journals and the computer lab with internet help to extend the frontiers of knowledge and deepen the understanding of the working of modern economies.

For the holistic development of the students, the department has been organising various programmes. The CONFLUENCE the Inter-Collegiate Fest, ‘The Economist of Tomorrow’ competition, SYMPHONY – The music fest and NOOPURAM – the Dance Fest, the Palliative Care Club SNEHASPARSHAM and community development programme are some of the laudable activities of the department.

The department has produced a number of ranks at the university examinations both at the graduate and PG levels. Our students can be found as Ministers in State’s cabinet, as MLAs in Legislative Assembly, as professors in universities and colleges in and abroad, as teachers in schools, in IAS and IES, in higher positions in government offices, as editors and programme coordinators in media, as Judges in High Court, as reputed advocates in High Court and sub courts, as Bishops, Priests and Poojaries, as cine artists, as planters, as entrepreneurs and businessmen. The department fosters healthy alumni – alma mater relationship. The department looks forward to upgrade it to a research department.
