In 1967, when the College was elevated from a junior college to full fledged degree college, the Commerce Department was also established as one of its four pioneer departments. The illustrious and eminent professor, M C Jacob took the helm of the department in 1969. Under his stewardship the department was hailed as one of the best Commerce Departments in the erstwhile Kerala University. The milestones of this department often coincided with that of the College itself. The college was elevated to the level of first grade College with the launch of M. Com programme in the Department, in 1981.
Over the years the department was guided by the academic excellence of many prominent and renowned faculty members. The department has always strived to excel in its academic pursuit. Having bagged 29 University Ranks till date (see https://baselius.ac.in/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Commerce-Rank-Holders.png), the outstanding performance of the Department is etched in letters of gold in the annals of the college. The pass percentage of the various programmes of our departments has always been commendable. A good number of students have got campus placement in banks and other reputed institutions in the past few years.
The Department conducts various certificate/ Add on courses in association with reputed educational agencies and institutes. A ‘Certificate Course in GST with Tally’ is conducted on the basis of an MoU with Tax Study Centre, Ernakulam, an authorised training centre under NCVRT. The department also conducts Certificate programme in MS Excel in association with G-TEC Computers. The Department has been the authorised study centre of ICSI offering Company Secretaryship Foundation and Executive Programmes. The Department has also entered into MoUs with International Skill Development Corporation (ISDC) for the conduct of ACCA & CMA-US from 2022-23.
The Department proudly organizes lecture series called ‘Tutelage’ which gives an opportunity to the students to interact with the stalwarts of various fields. The Department also conducts a lecture series commemorating the services of the founder HOD Late Prof M C Jacob, entitled ‘M.C. Jacob Memorial Lecture’.
Even when the department has been hailed for its academic orientation, it has not failed to nurture the plethora of talents displayed by the students. The students of the Department have also excelled in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. They have won several prizes and Championships at various inter-collegiate fests and competitions over the years. The students of the Department brought laurels to the college by becoming Champions/Runners up in various inter-collegiate and state level competition/fests. They have also bagged prizes at University and National Level Youth Festivals and Sports Competitions. The Department conducts annual intercollegiate Commerce, Management and Cultural Fest titled “Kaleidoscope”.
The Department aspires to surge forward and soar to greater heights in the coming years.
