The Department of Zoology was established in 1967 under the eminent leadership of Prof.C.M.Mathew. The Department remembers with deep gratitude the service rendered in different capacities by the retired faculty members - Prof. K P.Joy (currently member of State Environment Impact Assessment Authority), Prof.Titus Varkey, Prof.P.K.Alexander, Prof. Jacob .K.Mathew , Prof .Prasad Thomas, Prof. Thomas Varghese, Prof. Dr.Susan Paniker (who is an approved Research Guide of M. G. University) Prof.Bina Jacob and Prof. Jose Abraham, and laboratory staff Mr. P P Joseph, Mr. E.J. John and Mr. M. K. Kurien. It is a matter of pride that four of our teachers were elevated as Principals, Prof. K.P. Joy and Prof. Jacob Mathew as Principals of Baselius College, Prof. Titus Varkey as Principal of K. G. College, Pampady and Prof. Prasad Thomas as Principal of Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta.
In 1993, the Department had the much coveted opportunity to host a Refresher course in 'Environmental Biology' assisted by UGC for the Zoology teachers under the M.G. University. Again we look back with pride at the occasions when we organized the 'Zoofest-2000', a one-day work shop on Microbiology for College teachers in 2001 and ' Zoosem 2003' conducted under the auspices of the Zoological Society of Kerala. The Department also organized a National Seminar on 'Environmental Crisis Management and Sustainable Development' sponsored by M.G. University in August 2006 and a Zoological Exhibition- 'Zooex-07' in January 2007. In addition to these, the department conducted ' Animal science Congress 2008' organized by the Zoological Society of Kerala and a three-day workshop on restructured syllabi for college teachers, in July 2009, sponsored by M.G. University, Kottayam. A UGC sponsored 'Recent Trends in Biological Sciences and Bioinformatics' for college teachers was conducted in August 2011. The Department also hosted CBCSS Zoology Curriculum Review Workshop for Zoology teachers on 6th and 7th December 2011, which was sponsored by M. G. University.
Retired Prof. Dr. Susan Panicker, an approved research guide in Microbiology successfully completed four research projects (one major projects and three minor projects) financed by STEC, CDS Thiruvananthapuram and UGC. The major research project was 'Ecological Aspects and Microbial activity of rice-fish rotation farming in the wetlands of Kuttanad, Kerala' financed by CDS Thiruvanathapuram.
The Alumni are a matter of prestige for the Department as they shine in various professions within the country and abroad. The Department has a well organized museum holding more than 400 preserved specimens and an excellent library for reference. The Department also has a well-equipped Bioinformatics laboratory equipped with computer systems and network connections, Microbiology laboratory and general laboratory.
